City of Detroit Partners with Mobility and Infrastructure Leaders to Drive Hydrogen Innovation

Sustainable mobility
H2 Ecosystem
  • The City of Detroit, through the Office of Mobility Innovation, is partnering with BayoTech, FORVIA, Ivys Inc., and Symbio to launch a full-service hydrogen ecosystem.
  • The coalition will deliver zero-emission vehicles, storage systems, and fueling infrastructure in an integrated, one-stop model for sustainable deployment.
  • This effort positions Detroit at the forefront of clean mobility innovation, showcasing a scalable model for building and maintaining a hydrogen economy in major cities.

Detroit, MI – BayoTech, FORVIA, Ivys Inc., and Symbio today announced a partnership with the City of Detroit’s Office of Mobility Innovation (OMI) to establish a complete hydrogen ecosystem within the city. This coalition aims to accelerate the hydrogen economy and position Detroit at the forefront of clean mobility innovation.

The four companies will provide zero-emission vehicles, storage systems, and fueling infrastructure in a seamless, one-stop-shop model to enable sustainable hydrogen mobility deployment. The coalition’s ecosystem aims to showcase a pragmatic approach to launching and maintaining the hydrogen economy in a major city by offering integrated services for deployment, maintenance and engineering.

Within this coalition, the four participants will contribute their own respective areas of expertise:

  • BayoTech, a global leader in hydrogen production and distribution solutions, will produce and deliver the hydrogen.
  • FORVIA, a global mobility technology supplier, will provide hydrogen storage systems, including the only XL tank in the market for the heaviest (class 8) commercial trucks.
  • Ivys, a clean fuels infrastructure solutions provider, will deliver proven, modular and scalable refueling systems.
  • Symbio, a zero-emission hydrogen mobility solutions developer and manufacturer, provides a full hydrogen-electric vehicle solution with a lightweight drayage truck that does not sacrifice payload.

The announcement comes as a direct result of the City's efforts to engage with industry leaders and explore how hydrogen can contribute to the local transportation and logistics economy. The coalition’s decision to deploy in Detroit reflects the city’s growing role as a hub for clean mobility, and Detroit will continue working with hydrogen industry partners to expand sustainable mobility options for end users.

“Detroit is committed to creating a sustainable future for all our residents and we see hydrogen as a key alternative to fossil fuels for transportation and mobility,” said Tim Slusser, Chief of the Office of Mobility Innovation.

Vince Keenan, Head of Innovation Engagement and Hydrogen partnerships for the Mayor's Office of Mobility Innovation added, “Detroit knows how to build the things that move us.  This hydrogen ecosystem partnership is the right private-sector leadership at the right time - it's what the hydrogen industry needs, and Detroit is the right place to do it."

“BayoTech is excited to produce and deliver hydrogen in the Motor City,” said David Best, Chief Executive Officer, BayoTech. “This ecosystem will help advance the global hydrogen conversation and showcase hydrogen as a viable, long-term zero-emission energy solution.”

“As one of the world’s leading global suppliers of hydrogen storage tanks and systems, FORVIA provides optimized solutions for diverse use cases within the mobility landscape, from fleet deployment to onsite and mobile storage,” said Tarek Abdel-Baset, Business Development Director and Chief Hydrogen Engineer, FORVIA North America. “Our comprehensive portfolio of 33 certified containers across multiple size ranges deliver proven, safe, and efficient hydrogen storage and will help us support the coalition’s goal of laying the groundwork for a true hydrogen economy.”

“Ivys is pleased to bring its decades of experience deploying innovative fueling solutions from around the world to accelerate the adoption of clean vehicles in the City of Detroit,” said Darryl Pollica, CEO and co-founder, Ivys Inc. “We believe that medium and heavy-duty fleets operating within regional urban centers like Detroit are uniquely suited for hydrogen electrification, and are excited to join this distinguished coalition to enable this important transformation.”

“This coalition and ecosystem represent a major step forward in unlocking the full potential of hydrogen,” said Rick Breunesse, Business Development Director at Symbio North America. “Our collaboration demonstrates a shared commitment to zero-emission transportation solutions and will serve as a model for cities and fleets transitioning to hydrogen with competitive fuel cell solutions.”
